The vulnerability stemmed from SSL/TLS validation being disabled by default in vSphere connections. The root cause was the VSphere.connect method hardcoding 'ignoreCert=true'. Functions like doTestConnection in multiple classes and vSphereInstance in vSphereCloud.java invoked this insecure method. The commit diff shows these functions were modified to use a secure VSphereConnectionConfig with 'allowUntrustedCertificate' parameter, confirming they were previously vulnerable. The deprecated VSphere.connect method and its callers directly caused the insecure default behavior.
